Application

ACS (Aluminum-Clad Steel) is a high-strength metal conductor consisting of a steel core covered with a pure aluminum layer. It combines the mechanical strength of steel with the electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of aluminum. Its production process uses a metallurgical bonding method to tightly combine aluminum and steel to form a permanent composite material with excellent electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance and structural stability.

Compared with ordinary galvanized steel wire, ACS conductors have a longer service life in harsh environments (such as seaside, high salt fog, and acid rain areas). Its aluminum layer can effectively prevent steel oxidation and has good electrical connection performance. It is often used in conjunction with aluminum stranded wire to reduce electrochemical corrosion caused by potential difference.

ACS conductors are widely used in load-bearing components in overhead transmission lines, such as aluminum core stranded wire (ACSR), aluminum alloy conductor (AAACSR), OPGW optical cable core wire, etc. It can replace traditional galvanized steel wire to improve the corrosion resistance and service life of the line while reducing maintenance costs.

Specifications

StandardOrganizationMaterialTypical Application
ASTM B 415-1ASTM (USA)Aluminum-Clad Steel Wire, Class A– ~10% aluminum by cross-section- Steel: high-strength carbon steel- Aluminum: metallurgically bonded (not coated)Used in ground wires (shield wires), guy wires, and as core for overhead conductors where moderate conductivity and high strength are needed
ASTM B 415-2ASTM (USA)Aluminum-Clad Steel Wire, Class B or C– Higher aluminum content than Class A- Improved conductivity, lower strength vs Class AUsed where higher corrosion resistance or conductivity is desired, such as coastal regions or long-span shield wires
ASTM B 502ASTM (USA)Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Steel Core Wire for ACSRNot ACS, but galvanized steelCore wire used in ACSR conductors; not aluminum-clad, but zinc-coated for corrosion resistance
