PE and XLPE Insulated Overhead Bundled Cables
PE and XLPE aerial cables designed for harsh outdoor environments.
Insulated bundled conductors with excellent mechanical strength.
Ideal for overhead distribution where space and safety matter.
UV-resistant and insulated for long-lasting power reliability.
PE/XLPE insulated bundled cables – low maintenance, high performance.
Application
PE and XLPE Insulated Overhead Bundled Cables are advanced low- and medium-voltage aerial distribution cables designed for improved safety, reliability, and resistance to harsh environments. These cables consist of aluminum or aluminum alloy conductors, tightly bundled and insulated with either polyethylene (PE) or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE).
PE insulation offers good mechanical strength, flexibility, and water resistance, making it suitable for moderate climates and standard utility applications. XLPE insulation, on the other hand, provides superior thermal performance, dielectric strength, and aging resistance, enabling continuous operation at 90°C and short-circuit conditions up to 250°C, ideal for hotter climates or heavy-load conditions.
These overhead bundled cables are widely used in urban grids, rural electrification, and forested or coastal areas, where space constraints, vegetation contact, and safety are major concerns. Their compact and insulated design allows for reduced pole spacing, easier installation, and lower maintenance compared to bare conductor systems.
Manufactured to comply with IEC 60502, BS 7870, AS/NZS 3560.1, and other international standards, PE and XLPE insulated bundled cables are a cost-effective, durable, and safe solution for modern overhead power distribution networks.
Specifications
| Standard | Construction & Material Details | Typical Applications & Regional Context |
|---|---|---|

| AS/NZS 3599.1 / 3599.2 | – MV aerial cable (6.35/11 kV, 12.7/22 kV, 19/33 kV)- XLPE-insulated, screened, water-tree retardant- Semi-conductive conductor shield, copper wire/tape screen, optional HDPE outer sheath | – Standard for MV overhead reticulation across New Zealand & Australia– Often used where underground cabling is impractical |
| IEC 60502 (Part 1 & 2) | – International framework for LV and MV power cables– Supports PE or XLPE insulation, optional HDPE sheathing- Allows design flexibility in core configuration and screening | – Global utility projects, often adapted into national ABC specifications in Africa, Asia, Latin America |
| BS 7870-5 | – LV aerial cable (0.6/1 kV)– Conductors: Aluminum, compacted or circular stranded- Insulation: XLPE to BS EN 50397– Self-supporting or catenary neutral types | – Used in UK-style suburban overhead networks, often for municipal power upgrades or pole-to-building drops |
| Parameter | PE (Polyethylene) | XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Thermoplastic – softens under heat | Thermoset – maintains form under high temperature |
| Thermal Performance | Operating temp: 70–75°CMax short-circuit: ~130°C | Operating temp: 90°CShort-circuit: 250°C |
| UV Resistance | Moderate – enhanced with additives like carbon black | Excellent – inherently UV-resistant, preferred for long-term outdoor use |
| Electrical Strength | Moderate dielectric strength (~22–30 kV/mm) | Higher dielectric strength (~30–45 kV/mm), excellent resistance to water treeing |
| Mechanical Behavior | Flexible, good elongation, but less abrasion-resistant | Tougher, stiffer, more resistant to deformation and mechanical stress |
| Cost Efficiency | Lower material cost | Slightly higher cost, but longer lifespan and greater stability |
| Flame Resistance | Low – unless modified | High – compliant with fire-rated cable standards, ideal for bushfire-prone zones |
