Covered Cable (ABNT NBR 11873)
Covered cable designed to ABNT NBR 11873 standards.
Safe and durable solution for overhead LV distribution.
Weather-resistant covered conductor for Brazilian networks.
Ideal for urban and rural power lines – ABNT certified.
Reliable covered cable with tough insulation and easy installation.
Application
Covered Cable manufactured according to ABNT NBR 11873 is a low-voltage overhead distribution solution widely used in Brazil and Latin American markets. Designed to improve safety over bare conductors, it features a non-insulated aluminum conductor covered with a UV-resistant thermoplastic or thermoset layer, providing protection against accidental contact and reducing the risk of electrical faults.
Unlike fully insulated Aerial Bundled Cable (ABC), covered cable retains electrical conductivity to ground, allowing fault detection and protection systems to function normally, while still offering a basic safety barrier against vegetation, animals, and unintentional human contact.
The cable is lightweight, flexible, and easy to install on poles using conventional accessories. It is suitable for urban, rural, and forested environments, especially where cost, simplicity, and increased safety are important. It also supports network expansion and modernization with minimal infrastructure investment.
Compliant with ABNT NBR 11873, this cable ensures mechanical strength, weather resistance, and long service life under tropical conditions. It is an ideal solution for utilities seeking a practical balance between bare conductor systems and fully insulated ABC in overhead low-voltage networks.
Specifications
| Category | Technical Description | Typical Applications |
| Applicable Standard | ABNT NBR 11873 – Brazilian standard for covered (not fully insulated) low-voltage overhead cables | Widely used in Brazilian utility networks for 0.6/1 kV LV overhead distribution |
| Cable Type | Covered Cable (also called protected conductor) – single aluminum conductor with a thin insulation layer | Used where partial insulation is sufficient to reduce faults due to trees or contact |
| Conductor Material | Hard-drawn aluminum 1350-H19, solid or stranded, Class 2 | Lightweight and corrosion-resistant |
| Insulation / Covering | Thermoplastic material (commonly PE, HDPE, or PVC) with reduced thickness (not rated as full insulation) | Provides mechanical protection and limited electrical shielding |
| Structure | – Single-core conductor- Uniform thin covering (not meeting full dielectric insulation level) | Typically installed in parallel spans, not twisted or bundled |
| Voltage Rating | 0.6/1 kV nominal | Designed for low-voltage public distribution |
| Installation Type | Mounted on poles using insulators (as with bare conductors); no full insulation clearance reduction | Useful in areas with vegetation proximity or reduced outage tolerance |
| Environmental Resistance | Resistant to UV, moisture, and abrasion | Suitable for tropical climates, including high humidity regions |
| Standards Compliance | – ABNT NBR 11873- Reference to ABNT NBR NM 280 (conductor specs)- Can align with utility specs | Accepted by Brazilian utilities (e.g., Eletrobras, CPFL) for overhead systems |
